Benchmark International Successfully Facilitated the Transaction Between ZinCo and Holcim

February 7, 2024

Benchmark International is pleased to announce the acquisition of ZinCo by Holcim.

ZinCo, based in Nürtingen, southern Germany, was founded in 1957. The company is a pioneer and today one of the leading companies for extensive and intensive green roof systems, with more than 100 employees worldwide. Research projects and innovative systems developed by ZinCo inspire architects and clients to plan both private and large public buildings in a holistic and sustainable way.

As a global leader in innovative and sustainable building solutions, Holcim’s purpose is to build progress for people and the planet. Its 60,000 employees are on a mission to decarbonize buildings, while improving living standards for all. The company empowers its customers across all regions to build better with less, leveraging its broad range of low-carbon and circular solutions. With its innovative systems, Holcim makes buildings more sustainable in use, driving energy efficiency and retrofitting, enabling greener cities. The company consists of four business segments: Cement, Ready-Mix Concrete, Aggregates and Solutions & Products.

The acquisition of ZinCo by Holcim is a further strategic milestone to become the global leader in innovative and sustainable building solutions and to complement Holcim’s product portfolio in the growing segment of green roof systems. ZinCo, which will retain its brand name post-acquisition, has provided sustainable roofing solutions for a wide variety of projects, including the High Line in New York City and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Athens. The three ZinCo Managing Directors Ulrich Schäfer, Dieter Schenk and Manfred Krüger will continue in their roles and responsibilities to secure a smooth transition over the coming years.

Ulrich Schäfer commented on the transaction: "I started my career at ZinCo in 1981. In 2002, my Managing Partners and I had the opportunity to buy the company shares from the founder Walter Zink. Today, I am very proud that ZinCo is a specialist and an innovative key player in the area of green roof systems globally. I strongly believe that Holcim will be a valuable strategic partner for ZinCo, offering a great future perspective for our employees and our customers.

“Benchmark did an excellent job and provided strong support through every stage of the M&A process. A substantial effort is required to sell a company and we are very happy that we have trusted a professional advisor."

Robert Forster, Head of EMEA and Asia Building Envelope Division at Holcim, said about the deal: “We’re excited to have ZinCo as part of the Holcim family, strengthening our capabilities in green roofing and expanding our building envelope activities to enable greener cities. With our international reach we see the significant synergies between ZinCo and Holcim adding considerable value for our customers.”
